Heavy rains inundate most areas of Chittagong city, landslides feared
Due to continuous heavy rains in Chittagong, most of the low-lying areas of the city are submerged in water from knee to waist. Due to the accumulation of water, shops and businesses in the city have come to a standstill. The combined effect of rain, hill slopes and the swelling of the Karnaphuli has caused extreme suffering to the city’s residents. The Patenga Meteorological Department recorded 330.8 millimeters of rainfall till 9 am today, Tuesday (July 7).
There is also a threat of landslides due to heavy rains. Due to this, the district administration has been miking since Monday morning to safely evacuate people from the risky hills of the city. It is learned that due to heavy rains, water has accumulated from knee to waist in the areas adjacent to Chawkbazar, Muradpur, Gate No. 2, Halishahar, Patenga, Agrabad, Katalganj, Chandgaon, Baklia, Mohra, Barapole and Commerce College.
Meanwhile, classes and internal examinations have been suspended in many educational institutions in the city due to adverse weather conditions. However, the suffering of government and private employees, airport-bound passengers, pedestrians, people going out for urgent needs and hard-working workers has increased manifold.
Due to the impact of waterlogging, public transport on the roads has decreased. At the same time, the number of private vehicles has also been seen much less than usual. As a result, the common people have to wait for a long time to reach their required destinations and are facing extreme hardship. City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain went out to see the waterlogging situation in the morning.
Assistant Meteorologist of Patenga Meteorological Office Bishwajit Chowdhury said that 330.8 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours till 9 am on Tuesday (July 7). He also said that signal number 3 and warnings of waterlogging and landslides are in effect in the sea.
