Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that no political identity will ever be given priority in improving the law and order situation. He said that the police are now not arresting anyone based on party considerations except criminals. He made these comments during a discussion on the demand for approval and retrenchment proposals in the budget session of the 13th National Parliament today, Tuesday (June 30).
The Home Minister said that after the current government came to power, there has been historic success in the law and order situation and there has been record improvement. Information on various crimes including murder, robbery, and violence against women and children has been presented in Parliament. However, we are lagging behind in one area. That is, the incidence of rape has increased slightly.
He said that earlier, victims could not go to the police station to file a complaint or could not due to various social or political obstacles. Now they can easily file a case at the police station or file a complaint online and there is no obstacle in this regard.
He further said, “We have seen revolutionary changes in every step of the police department including immediate arrests, filing of charge sheets, production of witnesses and assistance in the trial process. As a result, the trial of the Ramisha murder case was completed within 15 to 17 days. This is a record in Bangladesh.”
“Also, we were able to arrest the accused in the Tonu murder case based on the DNA report, which broke the record that was not recorded even in 15 or 17 years and the rest will be completed.”
At that time, he said that it has been decided to operate the Narcotics Control Department as a self-contained department. Initiatives have been taken to add dog squads, weapons training, detention centers, modern laboratories and technology-based equipment for the department. He also said that the necessary security and modern equipment are being provided to the officers to prevent drug smuggling in the border areas.”
