Japan suffered a dramatic loss to Brazil in the World Cup. After the match, team coach Hajime Moriyasu could not contain his emotions. He told the players and fans in the gallery that he was entirely responsible for the loss. After the match, he gathered the players on the field, then bowed in front of everyone and apologized to the Japanese people.
Moriyasu said, “I am deeply sorry that we could not give everyone this victory. As a coach, I feel responsible for this and I apologize to everyone.” He added, “I sincerely thank the countless Japanese fans who came to the stadium in Houston to support us. Not only them, but I know that many people in Japan and around the world stayed up late at night to watch our game on television or the Internet and cheered for us.”
On that day, during the official broadcast of the World Cup, Moriyasu said a few words to the players and bowed in front of everyone after finishing his speech. The players then honored him with applause. He has been in charge of the Japan national team for eight consecutive years since the 2018 World Cup.
Despite the defeat, Moriyasu said, “It is really disappointing that our World Cup journey ended here. However, the players gave their all in this match. They have taken the process seriously every day until they got here and worked with extraordinary dedication. The coaching staff and the entire support team have also shown their utmost dedication throughout this journey. We did everything we could. Although we are very disappointed now, I want to accept this result and use it as motivation to come back stronger.”
It is worth noting that Japan has participated in the World Cup a total of 8 times so far. This is their highest achievement, having reached the last 16 four times.
