Although Portugal started the World Cup as one of the favourites, they failed to live up to expectations. They started their campaign with a draw against Congo in the group stage, before beating Uzbekistan 5-0 and drawing again with Colombia in the final.
The Portuguese football team has come under fire for their lacklustre performance in the Colombia match. The country’s traditional newspaper ‘A Bola’ even named Ronaldo as the worst player on the pitch. They gave the star a rating of 4 out of 10 based on his individual performance.
The report said Ronaldo’s shots were not very dangerous and he failed to capitalise on a big chance he had against Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. However, the attack was later ruled out for offside. Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes of the match. This was the second time in the tournament that Ronaldo has performed worse than expected.
CR7’s performance was also poor in the 1-1 draw against DR Congo in the first match. His best performance was against Uzbekistan, where he scored two goals. In addition to criticizing Ronaldo, ‘A Bola’ also named goalkeeper Diogo Costa as Portugal’s best player against Colombia. According to them, Costa was the best player of the match and received an 8 rating.
Diogo Costa did not concede a goal as Colombia’s attacks continued. The media noted that he ‘stopped everything’ and showed a ‘great performance’. One of Costa’s best saves came in the 43rd minute of the second half. He stopped Juan Quintero’s cross before it reached Luis Suarez.
With this, Portugal drew their two group matches. Although the result of the match was somewhat comforting for them, Colombia was ahead throughout the match and created more chances. Davinson Sanchez scored in extra time but it was ruled out for offside. Ronaldo’s Portugal will face Croatia in the last 32.
