The United States and Iran are holding direct meetings to resolve disputes over the security and navigation of the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting between the two countries is scheduled to be held in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday (June 30). Citing US officials, the media outlet Axios reported this information.
The report said that Washington and Tehran have agreed to stop attacking each other and end the ongoing US military campaign against Iran. As a result, the path has been paved for talks on the Strait of Hormuz. Axios also reported that previously scheduled talks on the nuclear program have been suspended for the time being. Resolving the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz is now being given top priority.
According to the report, the reason for this tension is not only the different interpretation of Article 5 of the Memorandum of Understanding on the management of the Strait. The delay in implementing a direct communication system between the US military and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which was supposed to prevent unwanted clashes at sea, is also one of the reasons for this dispute.
