Three policemen sentenced to death in Rampura shooting and two murder cases, two others given different terms

A court has sentenced former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman and three others to death in a case of crimes against humanity for shooting a youth hanging from a cornice in the capital’s Rampura during the July coup and killing two others. The tribunal has sentenced the other two accused in the case, ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, to 20 years in prison and ASI Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment.
A three-member judicial panel led by International Crimes Tribunal-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Murtaza Majumder announced the verdict at 12:25 pm today (June 28). The death sentences are – former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md. Rashedul Islam and former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station Md. Mashiur Rahman. A total of 13 people testified in the case. The state filed a formal complaint with the tribunal on August 7 last year. On September 18 of the same year, the tribunal framed charges against the accused and started the trial. The state is satisfied with the verdict. Aminul Islam, the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, said that the martyr’s family has got justice.
The verdict is being broadcast live on BTV. The accused in the case are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md. Rashedul Islam, former OC of Rampura Police Station Md. Mashiur Rahman, former SI of Rampura Police Station Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan and ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar. Except for Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, the remaining four accused are absconding. The state said that they were able to prove the allegations in the case through information and evidence. They expected the maximum punishment. On the other hand, the lawyers of the accused have filed an application seeking the acquittal of their clients.
