Group champions Argentina beat Jordan 3-1
Reigning world champions Argentina continued their unbeaten run in the group stage with a 3-1 win over Jordan. Lionel Scaloni’s side dominated from start to finish on Sunday (June 28) to secure their place in the knockout stages. The emphatic win sent the Albiceleste through to the World Cup round of 32 as group winners, where they will face struggling Cape Verde in their first match.
Argentina attacked Jordan from the start. As a result, midfielder Giovani Lo Celso broke the deadlock with a spectacular free-kick in the 19th minute to give the reigning champions a 1-0 lead. Jordan was busy organizing his defense after conceding a goal when the referee blew the penalty whistle in the 30th minute of the first half when Julián Álvarez was fouled inside the box. Lautaro Martinez coolly slotted the ball into the net from the spot kick to make it 2-0. However, Jordan came back into the game in a big way in the second half. Star forward Moussa Al-Tamari took advantage of a slight carelessness in the Argentine defense to put Jordan ahead 2-1 with a brilliant counterattack. Although the goal caused some unease in the Albiceleste camp, the legendary Lionel Messi dispelled all fears in the 80th minute of the match. The entire gallery erupted in ‘Messi’ chants as he received a free-kick just outside the box. The 39-year-old superstar, in his own style, broke through the Jordan defense wall with a magical and perfect free-kick and put the ball into the net. The goal ended all hopes of a comeback for Jordan and was LM Ten’s sixth goal of the 2026 World Cup. With this resounding 3-1 victory, the undefeated champions are now on target to beat Cape Verde in the knockout stages.
