At least six people have been killed in Israeli air strikes on the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. Local health officials and rescue workers said Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Wissah and a child were among the dead. Al Jazeera said its journalist Ahmed Wissah was killed in an attack on a house in central Gaza on Saturday (June 20). The outlet strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “heinous crime”.
Al Jazeera said in a statement that the killing of Ahmed Wissah was a clear violation of international law and principles and part of a consistent policy of targeting journalists. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), on the other hand, claimed that Wissah was a member of the military wing of Hamas and worked as a sniper. However, they did not provide any evidence to support this claim.
The Gaza Health Ministry said 1,007 people have been killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza since the ceasefire went into effect last October. Wissah and two others were killed in a house attack in the Buraiz refugee camp in central Gaza. Citing local hospitals and rescue teams, the IDF claimed that the other two killed were also Hamas members.
Ahmed Wissah’s brother and another Al Jazeera correspondent, Mohammed Wissah, was killed in an Israeli strike last April. At the time, the IDF accused him of being involved in Hamas’ weapons production activities. Meanwhile, four members of the same family were killed in another overnight strike in the Sabra area. The local hospital said two of the dead were children. However, according to doctors, two women and a child were also among the dead.
“They have nothing to do with Hamas. They are innocent people, just children.” Is this a ceasefire? We are ordinary people. I have never taken up arms. Further attacks were also reported in northern and southern Gaza.
