Two accused sentenced to death in Ramisa rape-murder case apply for jail

Two accused sentenced to death in the rape and murder case of child Ramisa in the capital’s Pallabi, Sohel Rana and Swapna Khatun, have applied to the High Court for jail. Today, Sunday (June 14), the High Court bench of Justice Mohammad Ali and Justice Md. Saiful Islam is scheduled to hear the admissibility of the applications.
Earlier, the death reference for the death sentence of the accused in the Ramisa murder case reached the High Court. On June 7, Justice Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict in the case. In the verdict, the accused were sentenced to death and fined under Section 368 of the Criminal Procedure Code. In addition, the death sentence will be executed subject to the approval of the High Court division.
On May 19, the beheaded body of Ramisa Akhter, an eight-year-old student of class II, was recovered from the house of neighbor Sohel Rana in the capital’s Pallabi area. The day after the incident, Ramisa’s father filed a case with Pallabi Police Station. Police arrested the accused within seven hours of the incident and filed a chargesheet in court six days later. The trial of the case began on June 1. Later, on June 2, 16 people, including Ramisa’s family, eyewitnesses, police officers, doctors and investigating officers, testified in the Ramisa murder case.
