Sohel fined Tk 5 lakh, Swapna Tk 2 lakh, Ramisa’s heirs to get money

The court has sentenced two accused Sohel Rana and Swapna Khatun to death in the case of brutally raping and murdering seven-year-old Ramisa in Pallabi, Mirpur, in the capital. Justice Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict today (June 7).
In addition, accused Sohel has been fined Tk 5 lakh and Swapna has been fined Tk 2 lakh. The fine has been ordered to be given to Ramisa’s legal heirs (heirs). If the fine is not paid, the Collectorate Office has been ordered to confiscate and sell her movable and immovable properties and give them to Ramisa’s legal heirs.
The verdict in the case was announced 19 days after the murder. Earlier, on May 25, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Ahiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station, filed the case. The case was sent to the tribunal for further hearing. The formal trial began on June 1 with the framing of charges against the two accused. The next day, June 2, 16 witnesses testified for the state in the case. This completed the testimony of the case in a single day. Then, on June 3, the accused were interrogated under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
On May 19, Ramisa was raped and murdered. After the murder, accused No. 1 Sohel Rana escaped by cutting the window grill of the house. After receiving information on the national emergency service 999, the police took the accused Swapna into custody. And Sohel Rana was arrested in front of the Fatulla police station in Narayanganj district. Ramisa’s father filed a case as a plaintiff at the Pallabi police station in this incident. On May 21, Sohel Rana gave a confessional statement in the court under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. After that, they were sent to jail.
Ramisa’s father lived with his family members in a rented flat in Section-11, Block-B area under Pallabi police station and worked in a private office in Banani. Accused Sohel Rana and Swapna Akhtar also lived in another flat in the same house. The victim Ramisa was a second-grade student at Popular Model High School.
