The incident occurred shortly before 6pm local time on Saturday (May 23) near a security checkpoint outside the White House complex. Citing a preliminary investigation, a Secret Service spokesman said the suspect suddenly opened fire on officers.
The man was later wounded when Secret Service members returned fire. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. A pedestrian was also shot in the incident. However, it is not yet clear whether he was shot by the suspect or in return fire. A law enforcement official said the pedestrian is in critical condition.
No Secret Service members were injured in the incident. Authorities said US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident and was safe. Security was tightened around the White House immediately after the incident. News crews were locked down for about 40 minutes. Witnesses said they heard multiple gunshots.
US media reporters said Secret Service members shouted “shootings” and told reporters to quickly take shelter in the White House briefing room. Later, armed security personnel were seen patrolling the North Lawn of the White House. Meanwhile, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel said the FBI was at the scene and was assisting the Secret Service in the investigation.
Shortly before the incident, White House Chief of Staff Sushil Wills, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and Vice President JD Vance were seen leaving the White House. It is worth noting that a similar shooting occurred less than a month ago during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Cole Thomas Allen, the accused in that incident, denied multiple charges, including attempting to assassinate Trump, and pleaded not guilty in court.
