A large gray dolphin (Shushuk) was caught in a fishing net in the Bishkhali River of Barguna’s Betgi Upazila, creating a huge sensation in the area. The dolphin, weighing about 15 kg, was caught in the fishing net of a local fisherman in the Bishkhali River near Betgi Ferry Ghat on Saturday (May 16) evening.
According to local sources, some fishermen had gone fishing in the river as usual. At that time, a large aquatic animal was suddenly caught in their net in the middle of the river. Later, after much effort, it was brought to the shore and identified as a dolphin, known locally as Shushuk. As the news spread, eager people from different areas gathered to catch a glimpse of the dolphin. Many took pictures and videos on their mobile phones.
Fisherman Jalil Mridha, who was with the dolphin, said, “After being speared, it was floundering in the water for a long time. Later, when it became weak, we brought it to the shore. It was probably speared when it came near the shore in search of food.” Locals believe that the dolphin was inadvertently speared while roaming the river in search of fish. However, the incident of such a rare animal being caught in the river has created curiosity and concern in the area.
