Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed hope that the second round of direct talks between the US and Iran could pave the way for a lasting peace deal. In an interview with The Times, he said that Pakistan is still playing the role of mediator despite the escalation of tense talks between Washington and Tehran.
He added, “From Iran, the US administration to the Gulf countries, all parties have confidence in Pakistan.” The Pakistani prime minister said that mediation efforts to establish peace are continuing. Shahbaz Sharif said, “Peace is not achieved easily; it requires patience, wisdom and the ability to move forward even in the face of the most difficult challenges.”
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the ongoing talks between the two countries are suffering from a “crisis of trust.” He made the remarks at a press conference in New Delhi after a meeting of foreign ministers of the BRICS countries. He said, “Iran has enough reasons not to trust the United States. But the Americans also have enough reasons to trust us.” At the same time, he noted that the ongoing talks between the two countries are essentially suffering from a “crisis of trust.”
