Protest by deprived Chhatra Dal leaders, Nasir declared unwanted in his own district, 10 leaders resign

In Noakhali district, deprived leaders and activists have protested by setting fire to and blocking the newly formed committees of various branches of Chhatra Dal, including Sadar Upazila and Municipality. At the same time, General Secretary of Chhatra Dal Central Committee Nasir Uddin Nasir has been declared unwanted in his own district, Noakhali, on charges of forming ‘pocket committees’.
The deprived leaders and activists have warned of strict programs including strikes in the future if these committees are not abolished soon. On Monday (May 4) afternoon, angry Chhatra Dal leaders and activists took out a protest procession from in front of the Noakhali District Jame Mosque. Later, they blocked the road at the Town Hall intersection in the district city of Maijdi and protested by burning tires. This created a long traffic jam on both sides of the road.
At the protest rally, former convener of Noakhali Municipality Chhatra Dal Mohammad Wasim said, “This committee has been formed with personal followers, excluding defectors and street workers. This has deprived real workers.” Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal convener Shahed Chowdhury Babu said, “There has never been such a controversial committee in the history of Chhatra Dal. The ineligible have been given positions without evaluating the qualified ones, which has created anger at the grassroots level.” Questioning Nasir’s family identity, Chhatra Dal leaders alleged that Nasir is the son of an Awami League family, his father is a ward member of the Awami League. He is now trying to destroy our party Chhatra Dal along with Awami League people. We are seeking the intervention of our leader Tarique Rahman. Considering our political background, we are demanding the cancellation of this pocket committee. However, rejecting the allegations of the pocket committee, District Chhatra Dal President NBS Russell said, “Those who did not get the positions are also defectors, that is true. But it is not possible to give positions to everyone at once.” Qualifications and organizational issues have been considered in the formation of the committee. Later, after the protest, 10 Chhatra Dal leaders including District Chhatra Dal Vice President Shahed Chowdhury Babu, Tarek Noor, Yasin Arafat, Organizing Secretary Akbar Hossain held a press conference at the Noakhali Press Club and announced their resignation.
