Grandmother hacked to death for not registering land, youth arrested
A 70-year-old Ayesha Khatun was hacked to death for not registering land in Phulpur, Mymensingh. Police have arrested her grandson Jasim Uddin in this incident. The incident took place at around 9 pm on Wednesday (April 29) in Jatia village of Bhaitkandi union of the upazila. The arrested youth is the son of the deceased Ayesha Khatun and the son of the deceased Mohidul Islam.
Sub-Inspector (SI) of Phulpur Police Station Azizul Haque gave this information. According to police and local sources, Ayesha Khatun was divorced by her husband long ago. Ayesha Khatun’s only child is Jasim, son of Mohidul Islam. His father died after Jasim was born. Later, Jasim’s mother married another man and died there. Since then, Jasim has been raised by his grandmother.
Jasim grew up and married and lived with his wife and two children in a house some distance from his grandmother’s house. Recently, Jasim’s wife left him with the children due to a family dispute. Since then, Jasim lived alone in the house and his grandmother Ayesha lived in her own house.
Sources have revealed that Ayesha Khatun has more land in her name. Jasim cultivates some of her land. Ayesha Khatun has a brother. He also has children. Jasim used to pressure his grandmother to register the land, suspecting that the children of his grandmother’s brother might get a share of the land. There was an argument between the grandmother and her grandson over this. Last night, around 9 pm, Jasim pressured his grandmother to register the land. An argument started between the two over this. At one point in the argument, Jasim hacked his grandmother to death with an axe. Later, the locals came to know about the matter and arrested Jasim and informed the police.
SI Azizul Haque said, “Upon receiving the news, the police immediately went to the spot and arrested Jasim. The body will be sent to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Legal action is being taken in this incident.”
