The government has declared zero tolerance against drugs and online gambling across the country. Despite this, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Pekua Police Station in Cox’s Bazar, Md. Morshed Alam, arrested an online gambling agent named Md. Kaiser and released him for 16 thousand taka. The incident took place on Monday evening (April 27) in front of the Gudikata Community Clinic in Taitong Union of the upazila.
After investigation, it was learned that ASI Morshed arrested Kaiser on Monday evening from a shop in front of the Gudikata Community Clinic in Taitong Union. At that time, the police officer found information about various online gambling apps and financial transactions on Kaiser’s mobile. Then, he demanded 20 thousand taka from Kaiser to release him. After a long discussion, ASI Morshed collected 16 thousand taka through bKash.
When asked, Md. Kaiser said that when he came to arrest a suspect with an arrest warrant nearby, he ran away as soon as he sensed the presence of the police. Then ASI Morshed suddenly took my mobile phone from the table. Then, seeing online gambling transactions on the mobile phone, he demanded 20,000 taka from me. Later, he cashed out 16,000 taka from my mobile phone to the agent number of a shop in Pekua Chaumuhani and released me.
When asked about this, ASI Morshed Alam initially denied the allegations. He said that I am not that skilled in mobile phone operations. He said that he would talk to his own force about these matters and hung up the phone. After a while, he called on WhatsApp and admitted to releasing the online gambling agent by taking a bribe. Although Pekua Police Station OC Khairul Alam was called several times to inquire about this, he did not pick up the phone.
