Expatriate Murder a Decade and a Half Ago: 7 Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
The court has sentenced 7 people to life imprisonment and acquitted 8 others in the murder case of an expatriate named Md. Rafiq in the Amirbagh area of Chittagong city. Today, Wednesday (April 29), Justice Muhammad Ali Akkas of the Chittagong Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sixth Court gave this verdict. The convicted are— Md. Bellal Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Shahid Raja (Prakash Shahid), Hossain (Prakash Md. Hossain), Jamal, Jasim and Milton Sardar.
On the other hand, the acquitted are— Md. Humayun Kabir, Panu Bepari, Abu Taher, Monir Hossain, Md. Dalim Mallik, Kabir Bepari, Kamal Sikder, Saheb Uddin and Moin Uddin. State lawyer Mohammad Hashem told Banglanews that based on the evidence, expatriate Md. As the charges of murdering Rafiq were proven beyond doubt, 7 people have been sentenced to life imprisonment. At the same time, the court imposed a fine of 25 thousand taka on each of them and an additional 1 year imprisonment in default.
He also said that the remaining 8 accused have been acquitted as the charges were not proven. Md. Bellal Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Shahid Raja (Prakash Shahid) and Hossain (Prakash Md. Hossain) were present in the court when the verdict was announced. They were sent to jail on the basis of the original sentence warrant. On the other hand, Jamal, Jasim and Milton Sardar were absent from the court. An arrest warrant has been issued against them on the basis of the original sentence warrant.
According to the case documents, expatriate Md. Rafiq returned to the country from the United Arab Emirates on July 16, 2007. On the night of August 14, he went to the market from his in-laws’ house in the city’s Kadamtali area. Later, around 9 pm, he last spoke to his family on the phone. He went missing after some time. At around 10:30 pm, after receiving information from a colleague, the family members went to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and found him dead. It was later learned that the miscreants killed him and left him in the Amirbagh area of the city. In this incident, the deceased’s brother Zakir Hossain Lulu has filed a murder case with the city’s Kotwali police station.
