Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar has hinted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested if he visits Budapest. Speaking to reporters on Monday (April 20), Péter Magyar said: “If a country is a member of the International Criminal Court and a person for whom an arrest warrant has been issued enters our territory, he must be taken into custody.”
He also said he had told Netanyahu of his desire to have Hungary reinstated in the ICC system, according to a Reuters translation. Current Prime Minister Viktor Orban previously developed close ties with Netanyahu’s right-wing government and has put Hungary on the path to withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC) before welcoming Netanyahu to Budapest in 2025.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in 2024 for war crimes committed during the Gaza war. Both have denied all charges.
