The first session of the 13th National Parliament has begun. The session began at 11 am today, Thursday (March 12) with the recitation of the Holy Quran. The President, Prime Minister, members of parliament, foreign diplomats and leaders and dignitaries of various political parties were also present in the first session.
Among the spectators of the National Parliament session were former Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s wife Zubaida Rahman, daughter Zaima Rahman and the chiefs of the Navy and Air Force.
At the beginning of the Parliament session, in the absence of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the Prime Minister proposed the name of veteran politician Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain as the President as per the rules of procedure of the Parliament.
Explaining the special situation of the current Parliament, the Prime Minister said that due to public anger over the anti-people activities of the previous fascist government, none of the former Speakers or Deputy Speakers could be found. They are either in jail or absconding.
Regarding the proposal to chair this important session, she cited the example of 1973, when the then Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also proposed the name of Maulana Abdur Rashid Tarkabagish. In today’s unprecedented context, we are starting the proceedings under the chairmanship of senior Parliamentarian Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
