Japan’s heavy snowfall death toll rises to 30
A record 30 people have died in Japan in the past two weeks due to unusually heavy snowfall. TRT World News reported that officials said on Tuesday (February 3) that a 91-year-old woman was among the dead. She was found buried under a three-meter-high snowdrift outside her home. Prime Minister Sane Takaichi held a special cabinet meeting this morning and ordered ministers to do everything possible to prevent deaths and accidents.
The Sea of Japan coast has been hit by heavy snowfall for weeks, with some areas seeing more than twice the normal snowfall. According to the country’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency, 30 people have died in the heavy snowfall from January 20 to February 2. A local police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that 91-year-old Kina Jin was among the dead. Her body was found under a snowdrift at her home in Azigasawa, Aomori.
