The government of Iran has suspended the death sentence of Erfan Soltani, a young man arrested and sentenced to death for joining the anti-government movement in Iran. The British media outlet The Guardian reported this information in a report citing Erfan’s family.
It is known that Erfan Soleimani, 26, is a businessman by profession. His home is in Karaj, a suburb of the capital Tehran.
Incidentally, he was arrested from his home in Karaj on January 8 on charges of joining the anti-government protests. He was then sentenced to death after just three days of trial. No relatives or friends of Soltani’s family were allowed to attend the court proceedings.
According to the British daily The Guardian, Soltani’s sister is a registered and professional lawyer. She was also unable to attend. His execution was scheduled for Wednesday (January 14).
Meanwhile, a woman named Somayeh, a relative of Soltani, told CNN, “Soltani’s sentence has not been carried out.” However, his sentence has not been canceled yet. We are awaiting further information.”
President Donald Trump said at a White House briefing in Washington yesterday, “We have learned that Iran has stopped killing protesters and has also suspended plans to execute those detained or arrested. We have been assured of this information by reliable authorities.” News of Soltani’s stay of execution came within hours of his comments.
