Delhi has summoned Bangladeshi High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah. In addition, the neighboring country has lodged a formal diplomatic protest over the recent threats to the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka and the anti-India provocative statements made by Bangladeshi political figures. He was summoned to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday (December 17) afternoon. Earlier, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday (December 15). Two days later, the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Delhi was summoned.
It is believed that the summons have been issued in the wake of recent comments by Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and one of the leaders of the student-led movement that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government. Speaking at a rally in Dhaka, Hasnat Abdullah warned that Bangladesh could harbour “separatist and anti-India forces” and “disconnect” India’s northeastern states, often known as the “Seven Sisters,” from the rest of the country.
Earlier this week, an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was burned during protests, further escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The provocative remarks, which come as Bangladesh campaigns for elections due in early 2026, risk further complicating diplomatic relations between the two neighbours.
