The Spanish giants won 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller in Lisbon on Tuesday night. With this victory, Barcelona went straight from the top eight to the last 16 with one match to spare. They are second out of 36 teams with 18 points from six wins in seven matches.

There were three penalties in the game, including Barcelona’s two. Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo scored an own goal. Benfica’s bench player Arthur Cabral saw a red card after the last goal.

Benfica’s fans were delighted with the first significant opportunity in the second minute of the match. Alvaro Fernandes passed the ball into the box from Tomas Araujo’s high pass to the left, and Pavlidis fired the ball into the net from six yards out.

However, he equalized the score with a cool spot-kick in the 13th minute. The referee awarded a penalty after Alejandro Balde was fouled in the box with the help of VAR.

But Pavlidis put Benfica ahead again in the 22nd minute through a fatal mistake by goalkeeper Stansny. The Polish goalkeeper, trying to clear the ball far outside the box, tripped Balde, and both fell to the ground. The Greek striker, who received the loose ball, sent it into an empty net.

Stansny, who returned from retirement, made another mistake in the 28th minute. He fouled Akturkoglu in the box. The referee did not take time to blow the penalty whistle. Pavlidis completed his hat-trick with a successful spot-kick.

After the break, Barcelona reduced the gap in the 64th minute due to a mistake by Benfica goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin. Trubin’s goal kick was headed by Rafinha, who was just outside the box, and the ball went into the net! Four minutes later, Benfica restored the two-goal lead. This time, Araujo made a mistake. The Uruguayan defender tried to clear the opponent’s ball from the left side of the box with a slide and sent it into his own net.

Then, in the 78th minute of the game, Robert Lewandowski reduced the gap from another penalty. The referee awarded the penalty after Yamal was fouled in the box.

Eric Garcia tied the score at 4-4 with four minutes left in regulation time. The defender, who was substituted, scored the goal in the 74th minute with a beautiful header from close range after Pedri’s cross.

Barca scored the winning goal in the sixth minute of added time. Rafinha entered the box after receiving a high ball from Ferran Torres. He avoided the obstacle of a defender and found the address with a shot between two players. The entire Barcelona camp was in jubilation.
